Since 2014, the Google.org Impact Challenge has awarded millions of dollars in grants to nonprofits and social enterprises using technology to generate change, locally and globally. In 2018, Google wanted to localise the story of the Impact Challenge and motivate more Australians to vote in the People’s Choice award than ever before. We saw an opportunity to depart from the traditional case study video and create a film that would get straight to the heart of the Aussie spirit. The film encourages an emotional connection to the Google.org Impact Challenge by reminding our audience of how much there is to be proud of in this country already, and that we can all take responsibility for a better future by backing the forward-thinkers who are working to create it.
We took cues from bush poets like Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson who wrote about some of our original pioneers, and reinterpreted this rousing mode of expression for a modern audience. Our slam poetry piece was performed by Dr Jordan Nguyen, Biomedical Engineer and Inventor, who fearlessly pushes the bounds of technology in the name of a better future. The campaign rolled out across online video, TrueView, display and print. We also created a toolkit of assets that the Google.org Impact Challenge finalists could use to promote themselves and encourage votes, and a suite of internal comms for Google.
